Our first ever St. Patrick Day celebrations went down a treat on Thursday. We fully embraced the spirit of the day, and I used up half a bottle of green food colouring. Which may explain the green poo. OK. Moving right along.
(Just a word in defense first, not all of said green food colouring was eaten. A large portion was devoted to making slime. More on that later.)
We started with a green breakfast of bacon and green eggs. I would have preferred to eat green eggs and ham, just because I’m a Seuss fan, but bacon is more tasty for breakfast, plus I had to use up some defrosted bacon.
Don’t they look happy? The Baby was only happy to pick it up and then throw it around the room. J Boy’s smile disappeared when he found out he actually had to eat green eggs.
Once breakfast was over, we merrily headed off to kindy for J Boy’s debut Show and Tell performance. He proudly showed his tool box that he had scored from his Poppy for Christmas. He expertly named all the tools, although it was unfortunate that the only tool he cannot learn the correct name for was the first the teacher pulled out of the box. (A “cubber” – as in a handsaw which – is good to be used as a wood cutter.) Complete oblivious of his own error, he was very aghast and quick to correct the teacher when she referred to a flat head screwdriver as a long head screwdriver. Anyway, it was very cute. The Baby clapped enthusiastically all through the experience, being a very supportive little brother. I probably should have checked the contents before The Accountant put the box in the car. There were several unauthorised inclusions that he has been stowing in his toolbox from sprinkler heads to, “the tool Daddy uses to get the oil out of the car.” There has definitely been some toolbox pilfering happening.
I hadn’t been well recently so it was unfortunate that I had to downsize our St. Patrick’s Day afternoon tea party. Because J Boy had been so excited about it, I couldn’t bring myself to cancel altogether.
So we just had his cousins around, then 2 little neighbourhood girls also joined in. In the end I had 8 kids by myself, so it wasn’t exactly restful, although it had saved a lot of work in the preparations with a simplified and smaller menu.
We had green cordial, green M&M’s, green cupcakes, green jelly and a little ‘pot of gold’. They also had party favours full of green goodies.
When J Boy heard the party was going to be green themed, he was very insistent that we needed slime for it. The slime turned out to be a great success. I just tipped a box of Lux soap flakes into a baby bath, (that very conveniently had been returned to me a few days before!) Throughout the day I kept tipping hot water into it to make it the right consistency. You were supposed to beat it with hand beaters, but I thought the lovely lumps were fun to play with, and I was right. The boys loved squishing them.
Some of the craft we had made prior to St. Patricks day became great decorations. We used this lovely piece of art to show how St. Patrick had used the shamrock to teach about the trinity.
Once everyone went home we had the dinner that I had prepared the night before. Cottage Pie with a green potato top. Now doesn’t look appetising? Kind of makes you feel a bit green, huh?
So all in all we had a very fun day commemorating the life of an amazing man. What did you do for St. Patrick’s day?

The tool box theft will no doubt be the first of many! Well that’s what all the fathers I know think about son’s using their tools!
Wow, what a lot of green!
We did… nothing…
now without being too gross did we have green number twos the next day 🙂 le xox
Wow — I’m in awe. You are a little bit of a super mum, you know that? What a wonderful batch of memories you’ve created for J Boy 🙂 And, good to see that the baby bath is being used straight away, hehe.
Well done Caitlin! Thought though seeing you said you downsized due to not feeling well, that you could have (pun intended) said you had been feeling “green” 😉
